Ho Chi Minh City at Night: What to Do After Dark
The city changes around six in the evening. The heat drops, the shops light up, and half of Saigon rides out to eat. This is the evening I would plan, with 2026 prices, closing times, and the places I tell guests to walk past.
- The free evening works. Nguyen Hue, City Hall and the riverside cost nothing.
- Food streets beat restaurants. Ho Thi Ky and Vinh Khanh run to 22:00 and 01:00.
- Bui Vien is paid for in noise. Beer is 20,000 to 50,000 VND, and its scams are the bar bills.
- The last metro is at 22:00 or 23:00. After that, plan the end of your night.
- Skip the 240,000 VND skydeck. The bar above gives the same view for one beer.

The free half of the evening
Start on Nguyen Hue, the pedestrian boulevard between City Hall and the river. It is 670 m long and 64 m wide, and it opened on 29 April 2015. At weekends the street closes to all vehicles from 18:00 to 22:00. On other evenings the side lanes carry traffic, but the central promenade stays pedestrian.
Live bands, K-pop dance crews and two musical fountains share the space every night. City Hall sits at the top, with new artistic lighting on its facade since late 2025, and its statue park fills with local families.
Halfway down, the Cafe Apartment at 42 Nguyen Hue is a nine-storey block of cafés reached by the original stairwell.
Then walk to the water. Bach Dang Wharf Park has a stone promenade, lit lotus paving and the Tran Hung Dao statue. Thu Thiem Riverside Park faces it from the other bank and gives the best view back onto District 1. The deck of Ba Son Bridge, lit with LEDs since late 2024, is the third classic spot.
The city has also been lighting its heritage buildings street by street, which is why an evening walk looks different from older guides.
The November 2025 phase brought Mong Bridge, the Thu Ngu flagpole and Ben Thanh Market into the scheme. A plan announced for April 2026 extends it to the Central Post Office, the Opera House and the State Treasury.
| Building or bridge | Lighting | Best hour |
|---|---|---|
| City Hall | New lighting, late 2025 | 18:00-23:00 |
| Ben Thanh Market | Lit from November 2025 | After 18:00 |
| Mong Bridge, Thu Ngu flagpole | Lit from November 2025 | Sunset onwards |
| Post Office, Opera House | Announced for April 2026 | Check on the day |
Three food streets that work at night
The streets that feed this city at night rarely have menus in English. Ho Thi Ky in District 10 is a flower market that never closes.
Wholesale trading peaks between midnight and 03:00, and a food alley sets up from 15:00, busiest from 17:00 to 23:00. It is cash only, the food is Vietnamese and Khmer, and most dishes cost 15,000 to 50,000 VND.
Vinh Khanh in District 4 is the seafood street. It runs a kilometre from Ben Van Don to Ton Dan, with nearly 90 eateries open from 16:00 to 01:00.
Oc Oanh at 534 Vinh Khanh, open until 03:00, holds a 2026 Michelin Selected listing. Budget 200,000 to 400,000 VND a person, in cash.
The Ben Thanh night market is the convenient one. From 18:00 the vendors set up on Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh, next to the metro station, and it winds down around 22:00. Prices start two to three times local, so open your counter-offer at 40 per cent.
| Street | Open | Order this | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ho Thi Ky, District 10 | 15:00 to 22:00 | Bún bò Huế, beef skewer | 15,000 to 55,000 VND |
| Vinh Khanh, District 4 | 16:00 to 01:00 | Grilled snails, crab claws | 200,000 to 400,000 VND |
| Ben Thanh night market | 18:00 to 22:00 | Grilled seafood, bún riêu | 30,000 to 50,000 VND |
Bui Vien, honestly
Bui Vien is 652 m of bars, an official walking street since 20 August 2017. Vehicles are banned only on Saturday and Sunday, from 19:00 to 02:00.
The prices are why people go: a beer is 20,000 to 50,000 VND, a 30-minute foot massage 100,000 to 200,000. The noise runs to about 02:00.
Two problems are bigger than the noise. The first is the balloon trade. Laughing gas is banned nationwide, the police restated the ban in March 2026, and the 2025 raids seized more than 37,000 canisters. Users can be fined too.
The second is the hostess scam. A woman invites you into a bar, there is no price list, and the bill arrives between $300 and $600 with bouncers at the door. Any bar that will not show you a menu is not a bar you should sit in.
Worth it for
- A cheap beer and a loud night
- Foot massage at midnight
- Street food after kitchens close
- You will meet other travellers
Skip it if
- Anyone offering balloons
- Bars with no printed prices
- Sitting before you see prices
- Expecting to talk over the music
Paying for a view, ranked by price
There are two ways to buy the skyline: a ticket for an observation deck, or a drink in a rooftop bar.
Landmark 81 SkyView occupies floors 79 to 81 of the 461.3 m tower. Tickets are 300,000 VND on weekdays and 500,000 at weekends, with children under 1.4 m at 150,000 and 250,000. Its published closing times conflict, so plan on at least 21:30 and ask at the counter.
Bitexco Skydeck on the 49th floor is 240,000 VND for adults. Children aged 4 to 12 and visitors over 65 pay 160,000, and under fours go free.
It closes at 21:30, last entry 45 minutes earlier. The cheaper trick is the bar upstairs: EON Heli Bar on the 52nd floor charges no entry, with beer at about 90,000 VND.
The rooftop bars are the third option. Chill Skybar opens 17:30 to 01:00 and runs happy hour until 21:00 at 88,000 a cocktail, and it enforces its dress code after 21:00. Social Club does cocktails at 280,000 to 350,000, half price from 15:00 to 19:00. Vertical Sky Bar has beer from 80,000, happy hour 18:00 to 20:00. Boosh Rooftop at 164 Bui Vien is the budget one, open until 02:00.
The cheapest night out in the city: the waterbus
The Saigon Waterbus runs route 1 from Bach Dang to Linh Dong. It calls at Thu Thiem, Ba Son, Binh An, Thao Dien, Thanh Da and Hiep Binh Chanh.
The full run takes about an hour. A single leg costs 15,000 VND and a return 30,000, and it is free for children under 1 m and visitors over 70.
The one thing to get right is the last boat. Published times do not agree, so treat the final departure as early to mid evening and read the board at the wharf. The 17:00 to 18:00 sailings, which give you the sunset and the skyline from the water, fill up first.
Dinner cruises are the paid version of the same view, sailing from 19:45 to 21:15. Indochina Queen runs 350,000 to 950,000 VND, and Saigon Princess from 650,000. You are paying for the table, not the route.
Getting back after midnight
This is the part of a night out that catches visitors. On its 2026 timetable, Metro Line 1 runs 05:00 to 22:00 from Monday to Thursday and 05:00 to 23:00 from Friday to Sunday.
That timetable has been revised this year, so read the board at the station. Most food streets close by 23:00, so late eating means a restaurant.
After 22:30 in the centre, plan on a car or a bike. Use Grab or Xanh SM for a price agreed before you get in, or Vinasun and Mai Linh for a metered taxi.
Unmetered taxis parked around Bui Vien and Ben Thanh are the trap: rigged meters there run three to five times the real fare. The other classic is the xe om rider who quotes "100", lets you assume 100,000 VND, then asks for 100 dollars.
| Option | Hours | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 1 | 05:00-22:00, to 23:00 Fri-Sun | 7,000 to 20,000 VND | Best before 22:00 |
| Grab or Xanh SM | 24 hours | Fixed in the app | The default choice |
| Vinasun or Mai Linh | 24 hours | Metered | Fine if you hail it |
| Pho Ha, Pho Quynh, Thanh Dat | Open 24 hours | About 60,000 VND | A bowl at 02:00 |
Staying safe after dark
Saigon at night is busy rather than dangerous. The one crime that genuinely hits visitors is the drive-by snatch, when a motorbike pulls alongside and takes a phone or a bag. The hotspots are Bui Vien and the streets around Ben Thanh. Four habits remove most of the risk.
Bag across the body
Keep it on the side away from the road, never on the traffic side.
Phone away at the kerb
Not at the kerb, and not on a street-facing cafe table.
Lit avenues after 23:00
Avoid unlit park benches and the stretches under bridges.
Book the ride, do not hail it
Grab or Xanh SM, with the fare fixed before you get on.
Five things we would skip
Each one is a way to spend an evening badly.
1. The hostess bar on Bui Vien. No price list, a bill of $300 to $600, and bouncers between you and the door. 2. The balloon bars. Laughing gas is illegal, users can be fined, and the police have been raiding since 2025. 3. Souvenir shopping at Ben Thanh. Eat there instead, and shop at Saigon Square. 4. The cyclo or xe om offered outside Ben Thanh and Notre-Dame. Unmetered, and usually quoted in dollars. 5. The 240,000 VND skydeck. The bar above it gives the same skyline for one beer.
Two evenings we would plan
The first is the free one, and it is what I would give a first-time visitor. It needs no tickets and it ends on the water.
- 117:45
Nguyen Hue, from City Hall down
Statue park, the lit facade, the Cafe Apartment stairwell.
- 218:45
Bach Dang wharf and the river
Lotus paving, the Thu Thiem skyline, the Ba Son cables.
- 320:00
Vinh Khanh, District 4
Grilled clams and snails, 200,000 to 400,000 VND, cash.
- 421:45
A rooftop in District 1
EON Heli Bar or Vertical Sky Bar, one drink, same view.
The second is the family version, because children change the timing more than the route. Do Ho Thi Ky from 17:00, when the alley is full of families, then take the waterbus for a short leg.
Bui Vien after 21:00 is not a place for a stroller. If it rains, and it will from May to November, the Night Tour keeps working.
Questions we get on the bike
Walk Nguyen Hue, which closes to vehicles at weekends from 18:00, then follow Bach Dang wharf to the Thu Thiem bank for the skyline.
Most food streets close between 22:00 and 23:00. Vinh Khanh runs to about 01:00, Bui Vien to about 02:00, and Pho Ha and Pho Quynh serve 24 hours.
For one loud, cheap evening, yes: beer is 20,000 to 50,000 VND. Avoid bars without printed prices.
The Saigon Waterbus. A leg on route 1 is 15,000 VND and a return 30,000, and the full run takes about an hour. Dinner cruises start at 350,000 VND.
Yes for the decks: Landmark 81 is 300,000 VND on weekdays and 500,000 at weekends, and Bitexco is 240,000.
