What Locals Actually Do in Saigon

Most Saigon lists send you to the same ten places at the same hour as everyone else. Locals live on a different clock: pho before 10 AM, wholesale markets at dawn, flowers after midnight. This guide follows that clock. Places, prices and hours come from our September 2026 checks, and we say plainly where they may have changed.

In short
  • Go early: Pho Minh sells out by 10 AM, Binh Tay wholesale peaks 6 to 9 AM.
  • Go late: Ho Thi Ky flower market never closes and peaks after midnight.
  • Cheapest river trip: the waterbus, 15,000 VND a leg.
  • Old-style coffee: Cheo Leo, open since 1938, still filters through cloth.
  • Skip: Ben Thanh souvenirs, priced 2 to 3 times local.

What do locals do in Ho Chi Minh City?

They do the same things you came for, just at another hour and a few streets away. The table puts the version most visitors get next to the one locals use.

One more local habit: addresses. Since 1 July 2025, Ho Chi Minh City has no districts, only wards. Everyone still says "District 1" or "District 10", and so do we. Our districts guide maps the old names to the new wards.

The morning city: be out before 9 AM

Saigon does a lot of its living before the heat. By the time most visitors leave the hotel, some of the best food is gone.

  1. 1
    6:00

    Dim sum in Cholon

Tien Phat, 18 Ky Hoa, the oldest dim sum house in old District 5. Dishes 62,000 to 110,000 VND. Busiest 8 to 11 AM.

  2. 2
    6:00

    Wholesale at Binh Tay

Binh Tay Market, 57A Thap Muoi. The wholesale rush runs 6 to 9 AM. Traders sell by the dozen.

  3. 3
    6:30

    Pink church light

Tan Dinh Church, 289 Hai Ba Trung, painted pink since 1957. The best light is 6:30 to 7:30.

  4. 4
    Before 10:00

    Pho in an alley

Pho Minh, alley 63/6 Pasteur, about 60,000 VND a bowl. It sells out by 10 AM.

Tan Dinh closes to visitors during the 5:00 and 6:15 weekday masses. Tien Phat stops serving at 12:30, or 12:00 at weekends.

Coffee the old way

Street coffee costs 15,000 to 25,000 VND, about $1. A chain charges 40,000 to 55,000 for the same glass. That gap tells you where locals drink.

Cheo Leo, since 1938

In an alley at 109/36 Nguyen Thien Thuat, old District 3, Cheo Leo has made coffee since 1938. It is described as the last shop still using the cloth-sock filter (ca phe vot). Drinks cost 17,000 to 29,000 VND, a bac xiu about 25,000. Hours run roughly 6 AM to 6 PM.

Order a bac xiu here and you drink a piece of local history. This milky, light coffee was born in Cho Lon in the 1950s.

The Cafe Apartment, used properly

The nine-storey 1960s block at 42 Nguyen Hue is on every list. The local trick: ride the lift up, it costs 3,000 to 5,000 VND and is usually refunded against an order. Then take the stairs down, because they open onto every floor's balcony.

Cholon beyond Thien Hau Temple

Most visitors see Thien Hau Temple and Binh Tay Market, then leave. Cholon gives whole streets to a single trade. Its first market grew along a canal that is today's Hai Thuong Lan Ong street.

StreetWhat it sells
Hai Thuong Lan OngTraditional medicine; an old trading street dating from 1864
Luong Nhu HocLanterns

Thap MuoiArtificial flowers
18 An Duong VuongSoai Kinh Lam fabric market
Nhieu Tam, Nghia Thuc, Bui Huu NghiaJewellery, around Hoa Binh Market

The assembly halls are quieter than Thien Hau and just as old in spirit. Nghia An Hall is on the same road, at 676 Nguyen Trai. On Lang Hall, also called Quan Am pagoda, is at 12 Lao Tu. Nhi Phu Hall stands at 264 Hai Thuong Lan Ong, on the medicine street itself.

At Cha Tam Church, 25 Hoc Lac, entry is free. A plaque marks the pew where Ngo Dinh Diem was seized on 2 November 1963.

Allow two hours for the quarter. Little English is spoken, so carry addresses written down. A GrabBike from Ben Thanh to Binh Tay costs about 50,000 VND, 15 to 20 minutes. Our Cholon guide covers the food and the history.

After dark: where locals eat and shop

The tourist night is Bui Vien. The local night starts with dinner, in District 10, District 11 and District 4.

Ho Thi Ky: flowers at 2 AM, Khmer food at 7 PM

Ho Thi Ky flower market in District 10 never closes. The wholesale peak is midnight to 3 AM, when stems sell for 2,000 to 3,000 VND. Next to it, a food alley opens in the late afternoon and stays busy until about 10 or 11 PM. The cooking is Vietnamese-Khmer: bun bo Hue at 40,000 to 55,000 VND, lemongrass beef skewers at 15,000, Cambodian che at 15,000 to 25,000. Bring cash.

Listen for a clacking of wooden sticks in the alleys of District 3 and District 4. That is a hu tieu go cart, noodles at 15,000 to 30,000 VND, out until about 1 AM.

Night markets with no tourists

Ba Chieu Market in Binh Thanh is where locals go for cheap and vintage clothes, with a night section from 7 PM. Hanh Thong Tay, at 10/2 Quang Trung in Go Vap, trades from 6 PM to 11 PM or midnight. For the full late-night map, see our night guide.

Free and cheap views

The best skyline view in the city is free, and it is not from a tower.

FreeThu Thiem Riverside Park
15,000 VNDWaterbus, one leg
90,000 VNDA beer above Bitexco

Thu Thiem Riverside Park, on the opposite bank, looks straight back at the District 1 skyline. Bach Dang Wharf Park, on the city side, has lawns and a lit promenade. Both cost nothing.

The Saigon Waterbus runs from Bach Dang to Linh Dong in about 60 minutes, past Thu Thiem and Thao Dien. A leg costs 15,000 VND, about 60 cents, or 30,000 return. Children under 1 m and riders over 70 travel free. Sunset sailings between 5 and 6 PM fill up, and the last boats leave early to mid evening: check the board at the wharf.

Details most visitors walk past

These places are on most lists. Here is what to look for once you are there.

  • Independence Palace: the basement war room and the rooftop plaque marking the F-5E bombing are the two rooms most visitors skip.
  • Fine Arts Museum: the 1929 Hua Bon Hoa mansion had the city's first private lift. It is still in the stairwell. Entry 30,000 VND.
  • Central Post Office: the wall maps are hand-painted, one of Saigon in 1892, one of telegraph lines in 1936.
  • Jade Emperor Pagoda: the room to the left of the main altar is where couples come to pray for children.
  • Thich Quang Duc memorial: the monk set out from Xa Loi Pagoda, 400 m away. Xa Loi's bell tower, seven floors and 32 m, is the tallest in the city.

What locals skip, and why

"No tourist traps" means naming them. These are the ones we see visitors fall into most.

Worth it for

  • Eat at Ben Thanh, shop at Saigon Square or An Dong Market
  • Book rides in Grab, priced before you leave
  • Visit Landmark 81 on a weekday
  • Buy coffee from a street cart or Cheo Leo

Skip it if

  • Hostess bars on Bui Vien with no price list: bills of $300 to $600
  • Laughing-gas balloons: banned nationwide, users can be fined
  • Unmetered cyclo and xe om rides around Ben Thanh after dark
  • "Weasel coffee": almost all of it is fake or blended

Two markets that are not what lists say. The Russian Market moved on 1 October 2025 to 125 Hai Ba Trung, and when we last checked, in January 2026, it was not yet officially open. Check before you go. Le Cong Kieu antique street sells mostly reproductions, priced in dollars.

Bargaining and fair prices are covered in our shopping guide, scams in our safety guide, and plant-based eating in our vegan guide.

Questions we get on the bike

They eat out. Food streets such as Ho Thi Ky, Su Van Hanh, Ha Ton Quyen and Vinh Khanh are busiest from early evening to about 10 PM.

Yes, around the clock. The wholesale peak is midnight to 3 AM. The food alley next to it winds down around 10 or 11 PM.

The waterbus from Bach Dang, 15,000 VND a leg. Thu Thiem Riverside Park, across the river, is free.

At a street cart for 15,000 to 25,000 VND, or at Cheo Leo, 109/36 Nguyen Thien Thuat, open since 1938. It closes on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month.

It moved on 1 October 2025 to 125 Hai Ba Trung. When we last checked, in January 2026, it was not yet officially open, so check before you go.

Yes. Districts were abolished on 1 July 2025 and replaced by wards, but locals, hotels and maps still use the old names.
