Saigon Shopping Tour with a Local
Ben Thanh Market opens at two to three times the local price and Saigon Square sells fakes that customs will take off you at home. Your guide is a Saigonese woman who buys her own coffee, fabric and gifts at these stalls. She rides you between the market, the mall, the workshop and the tailor, tells you the real price of everything before you ask, and steps in when the bargaining starts.

Why Shop Saigon With a Local Woman
The difference between a good souvenir and a bad one in this city is knowing the price. That is what you are paying for.
The Real Price, Before You Ask
Coffee is 60,000 to 120,000 VND per 500 g at the east gate. A tourist hears 200,000. Your guide tells you the number, then lets you bargain with a safety net.
No Commission Stops
We do not take you to a lacquer factory that pays us. Phuong Nam (19 Vo Van Tan, since 1996) is on the route because it is the best workshop in town; you can watch the eggshell inlay and buy nothing.
Customs-Proof Shopping
Fake Rolexes and Louis Vuittons get seized at US, UK and Australian borders. We take you to the stalls and the local brands that are legal to bring home.
Small Groups, Your Pace
Maximum six guests, so nobody waits while you try on an ao dai. Kids are welcome; the market has a food hall for the moment they get bored.
6 Stops, 3.5 Hours, Everything Within a Ride
Morning order shown. Tell us what you are hunting for and your guide re-plans the stops around it.
- 19:00 AM
Hotel pickup, District 1, 2 or 3
Helmet, a two-minute chat about what you want to buy (gifts, fabric, coffee, a suit) and a first pass along Le Loi to Ben Thanh's clock tower.
- 29:15 AM
Ben Thanh Market, gate by gate
Roughly 1,450 stalls in four quadrants: textiles at the south gate under the clock, fresh food at the north, coffee, tea and fish sauce at the east, ceramics and handicrafts at the west. Your guide runs the bargaining drill live on a scarf, then you take over. Morning prices are softest.
- 310:15 AM
Saigon Square, 77-89 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia
Air-conditioned stalls of clothing, bags and shoes: T-shirts 120,000 to 300,000 VND, backpacks 350,000 to 1,500,000. We skip the counterfeit aisles and go to the unbranded cotton and linen that locals buy for work.
- 410:45 AM
Local brands at 26 Ly Tu Trong
An old apartment block turned into twenty-plus Vietnamese fashion labels (Libe, Xeo Xo, Polkaholics), with a streetwear basement next door. Fixed prices, changing rooms, air-con. This is where your guide shops.
- 511:20 AM
Phuong Nam lacquerware workshop, 19 Vo Van Tan
A 900 m² showroom in District 3 where you watch the twelve-layer lacquer and eggshell inlay being done. Bowls and trays from 150,000 VND; the same pieces cost double at the market. No pressure to buy; we get no commission.
- 611:50 AM
Tailor consult (optional), then coffee and drop-off
If you want a suit (from about 4,900,000 VND, 3-day express possible) or an ao dai (from 300,000 VND, 2 to 5 days), we visit a tailor who writes price, fabric and fitting date on the receipt. Then a Vietnamese coffee at a roaster where you can taste before you buy 500 g for the suitcase. Drop-off at your hotel by 12:30 PM.
What Things Really Cost in Saigon (and What We Skip)
The part of the tour you can take home. Prices checked September 2026.
A shopping tour is only useful if you leave knowing what things cost. Below is the price list our guides carry in their heads, checked in September 2026, with the first number a Ben Thanh vendor will say to a tourist next to it.
| Item | Fair price (2026) | First asking price at Ben Thanh | Where we buy it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vietnamese coffee, 500 g | 60,000–120,000 VND | 150,000–250,000 VND | East gate of Ben Thanh, or a roaster your guide trusts |
| Silk scarf (real silk) | 168,000–300,000 VND | 300,000–500,000 VND | Fabric aisle, south gate; burn-test a thread |
| Lacquer bowl or tray | 150,000–500,000 VND | 500,000+ VND | Phuong Nam workshop, 19 Vo Van Tan |
| Ao dai fabric, per metre | 200,000–800,000 VND | 600,000+ VND | Ben Thanh south hall or Tan Dinh market |
| Embroidered bag | 30,000–200,000 VND | 150,000–400,000 VND | West gate, handicraft stalls |
| Dried mango, 500 g | 80,000–120,000 VND | 150,000–200,000 VND | East gate; ask to taste first |
| Cotton T-shirt | 120,000–300,000 VND | 250,000–400,000 VND | Saigon Square (air-conditioned) |
| Backpack, unbranded | 350,000–800,000 VND | 1,000,000+ VND | Saigon Square, upper floor |
| Tailored 2-piece suit | 4,900,000–9,000,000 VND | quoted in USD, 250+ | Reputable tailor, 2–3 weeks or 3-day express |
| Custom ao dai | 300,000–1,200,000 VND | 50 USD+ | Tailor near Tan Dinh market, 2–5 days |
The bargaining rules we teach in the first ten minutes
- Open at 40 to 50 percent of the quoted price on anything without a printed tag. Food stalls in Ben Thanh have fixed prices; the clothing and souvenir aisles do not.
- Settle around 50 to 70 percent. If the vendor drops fast, you are still high. If she laughs and turns away, you are close to her floor.
- Bundle. Three scarves from one stall beat one scarf from three stalls, every time.
- Walk away politely. Half the deals close on the third step. Come back with a smile, not a frown.
- Morning discounts are real. The first sale of the day (mở hàng) is considered lucky; vendors give ground before 9 AM.
- Count your change aloud. The 20,000 and 500,000 VND notes are both blue. Say the amount as you hand it over.
What we steer you away from
- Fake luxury bags and watches. Saigon Square and Ben Thanh were both raided in 2025 and 2026, and US, UK and Australian customs seize counterfeits at the border (Australian fines run to 2,720 AUD). We take you to the stalls that sell unbranded or local-brand goods instead.
- "Weasel" coffee. Almost everything sold as civet coffee at the market is flavoured or blended. Genuine wild civet coffee costs over 1,000 USD a kilo. Buy a good robusta-arabica blend for a tenth of the price and enjoy it.
- Antiques on Le Cong Kieu. The 200 m antique street behind Ham Nghi is mostly reproductions priced in dollars. Fine as decor, never as an investment.
- In-market tailors. The tailors inside Ben Thanh quote high and hard-sell fabric. If you want a suit or an ao dai we take you to a shop that fixes price, fabric and fitting date in writing.
- The coconut-yoke photo. A vendor hangs his pole on your shoulder for a photo, then asks 10 to 20 USD. Decline with a smile and keep walking.
Tax refund: what changed in 2026
Foreign passport holders can claim back VAT on goods bought in registered shops (look for the tax-refund sticker; department stores and malls qualify, markets do not). You need a minimum of 2,000,000 VND per shop per day on one e-invoice, and the goods must leave Vietnam within 60 days. The refund is 85 percent of the VAT, and VAT is temporarily 8 percent until the end of 2026, so you get back about 6.8 percent of the price. At Tan Son Nhat, show the goods, passport and invoice to customs before check-in, then collect at the refund counter airside. Card refunds take 7 to 15 days.
Getting it home
Lacquer and ceramics travel fine wrapped in clothes. For a bigger haul, Vietnam Post EMS is the cheap option (7 to 14 days, you pack it yourself); DHL and FedEx take 2 to 5 days and a 10 kg box costs roughly 80 to 300 USD depending on destination. Your guide can drop you at the post office on the way back; it is one of the eight stops on our City Tour anyway.
Gifts under 100,000 VND that locals actually give
- Phin filter and 250 g of coffee (about 90,000 VND together at the east gate): the gift every Vietnamese household already owns, which is the point.
- Bánh pía from a Teochew bakery in Cholon (a box of four, 50,000 to 75,000 VND): flaky durian-and-mung-bean pastries that keep for two weeks.
- Dried mango or coconut candy (60,000 to 90,000 VND for 500 g): taste at the stall first, the good ones are chewy, not sugary.
- A conical hat (30,000 to 60,000 VND): buy the palm-leaf one with a chin ribbon, not the lacquered souvenir version, and carry it on the plane.
- Hand-embroidered pouch (30,000 to 80,000 VND): the west-gate handicraft stalls sell the same pouches as the hotel gift shops at a third of the price.
Your guide carries a sample of each so you can decide on the bike, before the market noise starts.
Paying
Markets are cash only. Malls take Visa and Mastercard. The Vietnamese wallets (MoMo, ZaloPay) need a local bank account, so ignore the QR codes. Withdraw from VPBank or ACB ATMs, which charge no fee for foreign cards (VPBank allows 10,000,000 VND per withdrawal); Vietcombank and BIDV charge 50,000 to 55,000 VND and cap you at 2,000,000 to 3,000,000.

Shopping Tour Questions
Coffee (buy a robusta-arabica blend, not "weasel"), silk and linen, lacquerware with eggshell or mother-of-pearl inlay, embroidered bags, dried fruit and cashews, ao dai fabric, and tailored suits. Our price table above gives the fair 2026 price for each.
Different jobs. Ben Thanh is the place for coffee, dried food, fabric and souvenirs, with bargaining. Saigon Square is air-conditioned stalls of clothes, bags and shoes at lower opening prices. Both sell counterfeits; we route you around those aisles.
Most guests spend 500,000 to 2,000,000 VND (20 to 80 USD) on gifts and coffee, more with a tailor order. Withdraw at a VPBank or ACB ATM (no fee); markets do not take cards, malls do.
Yes at the tailors we work with, for a rush fee. Standard turnaround is 2 to 3 weeks with two fittings; the express service is 3 days with one fitting. A two-piece starts around 4,900,000 VND (about 190 USD). We only recommend shops that put price, fabric and fitting date in writing.
Only counterfeits. Coffee, textiles, lacquer and ceramics are fine for the US, UK, EU and Australia (declare food in Australia). That is why we do not take you to fake-brand stalls.
On purchases from registered shops (malls and department stores with the sticker), yes: minimum 2,000,000 VND per shop per day, goods exported within 60 days, refund about 6.8 percent of the price in 2026. Market purchases do not qualify.
No. Not the workshop, not the tailor, not the coffee roaster. Our guides shop at these places themselves, which is the only reason they are on the route.
