Saigon Tour Types, Compared
A vespa tour in Saigon, a jeep, a cyclo, the hop-on hop-off bus, your own feet or a motorbike: each one shows you a different city. We read the operators’ own pages on 4 October 2026 and compared prices, lengths and inclusions. Then we say plainly when each format is the right choice, including the ones we do not sell.
- Cyclo: $9 for a one-hour private ride on the page we checked.
- Hop-on hop-off bus: from £16.22, about $21 for a 1 or 2-day ticket.
- Jeep: $71 per adult for a half day, under 5 free.
- Vintage Vespa: $74 per person, lunch and entry fees included.
- Our motorbike City Tour: $45, 4 hours, tickets included.
- Best format depends on age, mobility and distance.

Six Saigon tour formats, side by side
Every format below shows you the city. They differ in three things: how far you get in a morning, how close you get to the street, and who in your group will enjoy it.
| Format | What it lets you do | What you give up | The right pick for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Stop anywhere, enter every shop and lane | Range: Cholon is about 8 km from Ben Thanh | Good walkers with a free morning |
| Cyclo | Ride seated and slow while a driver pedals | Distance: one hour covers about 4.7 km | Seniors, small children, a first hour in town |
| Hop-on hop-off bus | A seated overview with commentary, off where you like | Lanes and stalls a bus cannot reach | Limited mobility, a first-day overview |
| Jeep | An open-air car with a guide and a driver | Lanes too narrow for a car, short stops | Children under 6, people who avoid two wheels |
| Vintage Vespa | Ride pillion on a classic scooter | One of the highest prices per person we found | Travellers for whom the old machine is the point |
| Motorbike | Several districts in one outing, stalls on the way | You ride in traffic, heat and rain | Travellers at ease on two wheels who want range |
No format wins everywhere. Ages, mobility and time decide.

I choose the format by distance, not by the photograph. A cyclo covers the centre on its own; anything past District 3 needs wheels and a driver who knows the alleys.
Prices and lengths, checked on 4 October 2026
Figures from operators' own pages, read on 4 October 2026: a snapshot, since prices move. We compare formats, not companies, so we do not name them.
| Format | Example checked | Price | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclo | Private ride in the centre, guide optional | $9 per person | 1 hour, 4.7 km |
| Cyclo | Private half day, guide $50 per group extra | $30 per person | 3.5 hours, 15 km |
| Hop-on hop-off bus | 1 or 2-day ticket, two routes | From £16.22 (about $21) | Unlimited rides while valid |
| Jeep | Half day, guide, tickets and drinks | $71 adult, $32 ages 5 to 9 | 8:30 to 11:30 AM |
| Vintage Vespa | City tour, guide, lunch and entry fees | $74 per person | Not stated on the page |
| Walking food tour | Small group, 8 guests at most | $45 | 3.5 to 4 hours |
| Our motorbike City Tour | Guide drives, Palace and museum tickets | $45 | 4 hours |
Compare what is included, not only the price. The jeep and Vespa tours include entry fees, and the Vespa one adds lunch. The $9 cyclo hour is a ride, with the guide sold separately. The bus ticket covers transport, commentary and Wi-Fi; entry tickets are not on its list.
Walking: free, close, and short range
Walking costs nothing and lets you stop anywhere. In the old District 1 core it works well. Nguyen Hue Walking Street runs 670 m from City Hall to the river. Book Street is a 100 m lane beside the Post Office.
The limits are distance and heat. Binh Tay Market in Cholon is about 8 km from Ben Thanh. Temperatures sit between 25 and 35 C all year, so plan outdoor time from 8 AM to noon, or after 4 PM.
A guided walking food tour is the other option: $45 for 3.5 to 4 hours, 8 guests at most, on the one we checked.
Cyclo: slow, seated and central
A cyclo is a pedicab pedalled by a driver. The slow pace is the whole idea.
On the page we checked, a one-hour ride covers 4.7 km and costs $9 per person. Two hours cover 8 km for $19, and a half day covers 15 km in 3.5 hours for $30. The half day ends in Cholon, with a few stretches on foot.
The guide is often extra: $40 to $50 per group there, "strongly recommended" for the half day. A second operator's 3-hour cyclo tour includes an English-speaking guide, but notes that drivers pass the War Remnants Museum and Independence Palace without stopping. If those two matter to you, ask before you book.
Worth it for
- Seniors and families with small children, both named by the operators
- A first hour in town, to get used to the traffic from a seat
- Photos at walking pace without the walk
Skip it if
- You want museum visits included without checking
- Your hotel is outside the centre: pickups we saw were in District 1
Hop-on hop-off bus: the overview
A global hop-on hop-off brand prices its US page in pounds: a 1 or 2-day ticket from £16.22, about $21 at October 2026 rates. There are two routes: red through the centre, blue through Cho Lon. Commentary comes in several languages, with a live guide too.
Red route stops include the Museum of Vietnamese History, the Bitexco Skydeck, Nha Rong Wharf and the Ho Chi Minh Museum. The blue route reaches Ho Thi Ky flower market, Binh Tay Market, Thien Hau Temple and Van Phat Pagoda. A local operator also sells a 60-minute city loop, and tickets valid 4 hours, 24 hours or a full day.
Access is its strong point: a designated wheelchair space, but no ramp, so ask how boarding works.
Jeep: a car with the roof off
Jeep tours use open-air US Army jeeps, with a driver and a guide. The half day we checked runs from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. It costs $71 per adult, $32 for ages 5 to 9, and nothing under 5.
The price includes entry fees, drinks, insurance and hotel pickup in Districts 1, 3 and 4. Other districts add $5 to $10.
The schedule is the trade-off. Independence Palace at 8:30, the Post Office at 9:00, the War Remnants Museum at 9:30, the Jade Emperor Pagoda at 10:00. Our landmark research gives the museum alone 1.5 to 2 hours. Every half-day tour, ours included, faces this choice.
A jeep suits families with children under 6, whom our motorbike tours cannot take, and anyone who will not ride a two-wheeler. That operator does not recommend it for pregnant women past six months.
Vintage Vespa: the ride as the attraction
On a Vespa tour you ride pillion behind a driver on a classic scooter. One operator says its fleet is 1960s and 1970s models restored in its own workshop.
The Saigon tour we checked costs $74 per person. It includes the scooter, a driver, an English-speaking guide, a helmet, fuel, water, lunch, entrance fees and local insurance, and it ends at your hotel. Its stops include the flower market, Chinatown and a temple, the Post Office and the Cathedral.
You sit where you sit on our tours: behind someone who knows the traffic. Guests do not drive, and one scooter operator explains why. Driving without a licence breaks Vietnamese law, and your insurance will not cover an accident.
Choose a Vespa if the scooter itself is what you want to remember.
Motorbike: our format, and its limits
This is what we sell, so read this section with that in mind. Our guides are local women who drive; you ride behind them. The City Tour costs $45 for 4 hours and eight landmarks, with Palace and War Remnants Museum tickets included. The Street Food Tour costs $57 and crosses five districts from 5:30 PM.
The strength is range. A motorbike fits lanes a car cannot, and reaches Cholon from the centre in 15 to 20 minutes.
The limit is risk, and we will not hide it. In Vietnam, motorcycles are involved in 65 to 70% of road accidents and more than 90% of traffic deaths. The UK government says riding a motorbike here is much riskier than in the UK.
What we do about it: an announced average speed of 30 km/h, helmets in every size cleaned after each tour, passenger insurance and ponchos on board. Children join from age 6 with a parent. Our motorbike safety page covers helmets, pace, insurance and the law.
Worth it for
- You want several districts in one outing
- Street food is the goal
- Heat and a passing shower do not bother you
Skip it if
- Someone in your group is under 6
- Anyone is nervous in traffic: a cyclo or a jeep is kinder
- You need step-free access: the bus is easier
E-bike and tuk-tuk tours, not verified
Two more formats show up in searches without facts we could print. We would rather say so.
Tuk-tuk. In Vietnamese these three-wheelers are called xe lam or xe loi. A Saigon tuk-tuk operator has a booking page, but it shows no price before you ask. A local travel agency writes that the authorities have limited tuk-tuks in big cities because of traffic, It gives no date or reference, so treat that as a lead, not a rule.
E-bike. We could not check e-bike tours for this update. If you ride one yourself, ask about the licence and the insurance.
Saigon distances, counted in minutes
Traffic sets the pace more than kilometres do. Times are by motorbike or car from the centre.
- 110 min
District 4
About 2 km from Ben Thanh, home to the Vinh Khanh seafood street.
- 215 to 20 min
Cholon
Binh Tay Market, about 8 km away. On foot in the heat, that is a long walk.
- 3About 7 km
Thao Dien
The expat area, also reachable on Metro Line 1.
- 420 to 40 min
District 7
7.5 to 10 km by car, depending on traffic.
So match the format to the map. A central morning works on foot or by cyclo. The centre plus Cholon needs wheels or the blue bus route. A day across three or four areas is where motorbikes and cars earn their price. Our hour-by-hour itinerary shows how to combine them.
Which format fits your group?
- Grandparents or limited mobility: the bus first, then a cyclo hour for the street.
- Children under 6: a jeep, a cyclo, or a stroller walk in the centre.
- Children 6 and over: any format, ours included, with a parent beside them.
- Food is the goal: a walking food tour for one area in depth, a motorbike tour for several districts. Our food tour comparison goes further.
- Nervous about traffic: a jeep or the bus. Keep two wheels for another trip.
Questions we get on the bike
The one we checked on 4 October 2026 costs $74 per person, with guide, lunch and entrance fees.
A jeep suits children under 6 and people who avoid two wheels. A motorbike covers more ground.
On the page we checked: $9 for one hour, $19 for two hours, $30 for a 3.5-hour half day. A guide can cost extra.
For a first overview or limited mobility, yes. Tickets start at £16.22, about $21.
No. Riding without a valid licence breaks Vietnamese law and voids your insurance.
A tuk-tuk operator exists, but publishes no price. We could not verify e-bike tours for this update.
