Bui Vien Street: a guide to the loud one

Bui Vien is 652 metres of bars, hostels and street kitchens, and it runs until two in the morning. We ride it most nights, and this is the honest version: what it costs, when to go, and the three things we tell every guest to walk past.

In short
  • 652 metres, one street. Bui Vien became an official walking street on 20 August 2017.
  • Vehicles are banned Saturday and Sunday, 19:00 to 02:00. On other evenings the side lanes still carry traffic.
  • Beer is 20,000 to 50,000 VND a glass. A bar round runs 100,000 to 300,000.
  • The risk is the bill, not the street. A bar with no price list ends at $300 to $600.
  • Be gone by 23:00 if you are on your own. Take a Grab, and keep your bag on the inside.

What Bui Vien Street is

Bui Vien is one street, 652 metres long, in Cau Ong Lanh ward. It sits in the middle of the backpacker quarter, next to Pham Ngu Lao, where hostels rent for $9.50 to $10 a night.

It became an official walking street on 20 August 2017. Vehicles are banned on Saturday and Sunday, from 19:00 to 02:00. On other evenings the side lanes still carry traffic.

In daylight it looks ordinary: travel desks, laundry, cheap kitchens, motorbikes parked three deep. The street changes around seven in the evening. It is loudest between 21:00 and 23:00, and the noise holds until about 02:00.

Pham Ngu Lao, the street beside it, is calmer and cheaper for food. The rest of the city after dark, from the free riverfront to the food streets, is in our night guide.

Is Bui Vien Street safe at night?

Violent crime against visitors is rare here. The crime that does happen is bag snatching from a passing motorbike, and Bui Vien is one of its two hotspots in the city, along with the streets around Ben Thanh Market.

Two people ride past, the passenger takes the phone or the bag, and the bike is gone. Most injuries come from holding on and being dragged. Let go of the bag.

What we do ourselves: carry the bag across your body, on the side away from the road. Keep the phone out of your hand at the kerb and at street-facing tables.

Stay in lit places after 23:00, and ride home in a Grab or Xanh SM rather than a street taxi. Women describe this street after 22:00 as uncomfortable rather than threatening. The complaints we hear are the crowds, the noise and the staring.

If you are on your own, take a ride for anything over 500 metres after 22:00, and keep your address written in Vietnamese. Our solo female guide covers the calmer districts and the practical details.

Two things about drinking. Reports of drink spiking in nightlife areas are rare, but they exist. Unbranded spirit cocktails in the Pham Ngu Lao area have also been linked to methanol. Buy your own drinks and watch them poured.

Laughing-gas balloons are illegal nationwide. Police repeated the ban in March 2026 and raided bars on this street in July and August 2025, seizing more than 37,000 canisters. Sellers face fines of 20 to 50 million VND, and users can be fined too. Crowds here have been thinner after 23:00 since those raids.

Budget guesthouses on the street have had break-ins, so leave valuables in the safe. The wider picture, with the numbers, is in our safety guide.

What a night here costs in 2026

Prices on this street are published often enough that fair is knowable. These are the figures we checked in March 2026.

WhatFair price, 2026
Beer, one glass20,000 to 50,000 VND
Drinks, one bar round100,000 to 300,000 VND
Street foodFrom 50,000 VND
Foot massage, 30 minutes100,000 to 200,000 VND
A bar with no price list$300 to $600 at the door. This is the trap.

Anything far below those numbers is a different conversation, and it is usually about the bill that arrives at the end. A round of drinks above 300,000 VND buys you the view, not the beer.

Eating, drinking and the foot massage

Nobody comes to Bui Vien for the finest cooking. You come for a plate at midnight, and the street does that well enough. Street food starts at 50,000 VND, and the stalls keep serving until 02:00 or 03:00 at weekends.

The one address on this street we send guests to sits above it. Boosh Rooftop, at 164 Bui Vien, opens at 17:00 and closes at 02:00. It is the budget rooftop of the area.

A 30-minute foot massage costs 100,000 to 200,000 VND, and there are shops every few metres. Agree the price and the length before you sit down, and keep your bag on your lap.

If you want to eat properly, leave. Vinh Khanh, the seafood street in District 4, is about one kilometre away, with nearly 90 eateries open roughly 16:00 to 01:00. It is busiest from 18:00 to 23:00 and costs 200,000 to 400,000 VND a person. Our night guide maps the food streets, and the street food guide covers what to order once you are there.

What we tell guests to skip

Two lists. The first is what we actually do on this street. The second is what we watch visitors fall into.

Worth it for

  • Drink where the price list is on the wall, at 20,000 to 50,000 VND a glass
  • Walk the 652 metres once, then walk Nguyen Hue, which closes to vehicles at weekends from 18:00
  • Ride home in a Grab or Xanh SM, with the price agreed before you get in
  • Eat at the Ben Thanh night market, and shop elsewhere: the same goods cost 2 to 3 times local here

Skip it if

  • An invitation into a bar with no price list, where the bill arrives at $300 to $600 with someone at the door
  • Laughing-gas balloons: banned nationwide, and users can be fined
  • Unmetered cyclo and xe om rides around Ben Thanh after dark
  • The coconut-yoke and shoe-shine “gift” on Nguyen Hue or Dong Khoi, which ends in a demand for $10 to $20

Getting there and what is next to it

Bui Vien is in Cau Ong Lanh ward, in what everyone still calls District 1. Ben Thanh Market is about a kilometre away, and the metro Line 1 station of the same name is beside it.

A GrabBike ride of 2 to 3 kilometres costs 20,000 to 30,000 VND. The base fare is 12,000, then 4,000 to 5,000 a kilometre. GrabCar starts at 30,000 plus 9,000 to 12,000 a kilometre.

Street taxis copy the liveries of the two reputable firms, so check for Vinasun or Mai Linh. A rigged meter runs 3 to 5 times the fair price.

Two things are within walking distance. Ben Thanh night market sets up from 18:00 on Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh and runs to about 22:00, later at weekends. Nguyen Hue is a 670-metre pedestrian boulevard, with the nine-storey Cafe Apartment at number 42.

An hour by hour evening, as we ride it

This is the evening we would give a friend, in the order we ride it ourselves.

  1. 1
    18:00

    Eat first, somewhere else

Ben Thanh night market, or Vinh Khanh in District 4 if you have the appetite for the ride. Bui Vien is for the noise, not the dinner.

  2. 2
    19:00

The vehicle ban starts, Saturday and Sunday

From 19:00 until 02:00 the street is yours. On other nights, only the centre of it is.

  3. 3
    20:00

    Walk it end to end

652 metres takes about ten minutes at a normal pace. Do it before the crowds arrive.

  4. 4
    21:00

    The peak

This is the loudest and busiest hour of the night, and the worst time to be holding your phone out.

  5. 5
    23:00

    The street thins

Crowds have dropped noticeably since the 2025 raids on these bars. It is also the hour we would be leaving.

  6. 6
    02:00

The noise stops, the food does not

Music ends around 02:00. At weekends some stalls keep serving until 03:00.

Questions we get on the bike

Violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risk is bag snatching from a passing motorbike. Carry your bag on the side away from the road, and keep your phone out of your hand at the kerb.

It is quiet before 19:00. The peak runs from 21:00 to 23:00, and the noise continues until about 02:00, or 03:00 for some weekend food stalls.

No. Vehicles are officially banned on Saturday and Sunday, from 19:00 to 02:00. On other evenings the side lanes still carry traffic.

Between 20,000 and 50,000 VND a glass in 2026. A round of drinks in a bar runs from 100,000 to 300,000 VND.

Any bar with no price list, where bills reach $300 to $600. Laughing-gas balloons, banned nationwide and fineable for users. And unmetered cyclo or xe om rides around Ben Thanh after dark.

It is in Cau Ong Lanh ward, next to Pham Ngu Lao, about a kilometre from Ben Thanh Market and its metro Line 1 station. A 2 to 3 kilometre GrabBike ride costs 20,000 to 30,000 VND.
