Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh City

Most guides to Ho Chi Minh City list twenty names and no prices. This one comes from the women who ride these streets every day. The 2026 ticket prices, the hours that changed this year, and the stops worth skipping.

In short
  • The centre is walkable. City Hall, Nguyen Hue, the post office and Ben Thanh are all in one walkable pocket.
  • Tickets are cheap. The War Remnants Museum is 40,000 VND (about $1.55). The post office and Book Street are free.
  • Skip Notre-Dame inside. Restoration runs past 2027 and the interior opens for mass only.
  • Cu Chi costs a day. Foreign visitors pay 135,000 VND and the trip runs six hours.
  • Rain lands mid-afternoon. From May to November, go outdoors before noon or after 16:00.

How to choose what to do, in five minutes

Ho Chi Minh City rewards a loose plan. The traffic is heavy, the best stops cluster into a few areas, and a day spent crossing town twice is a day lost.

Two things changed in 2025 and 2026 that most guides miss. The city has a metro, and it no longer has districts.

The stops everyone names, with 2026 prices

These earn their reputation. Prices are the published 2026 adult rates. State events close the palace without notice, so check the day before.

The War Remnants Museum at 28 Vo Van Tan is the stop nobody regrets. Start in the aircraft yard, save the Agent Orange room for last, and think twice about bringing a child under twelve.

The palace hides its best rooms behind a staircase: the basement war room and the rooftop plaque. Buy tickets at the second gate on Nguyen Du. The post office and Book Street next door are the cheapest good hour in town, with hand-painted maps from 1892 and 1936.

Worth your time, and what you can skip

Four days hold about eight real stops. This is how we would spend them, and what we would leave out without guilt.

Worth it for

  • The War Remnants Museum, even in two hours
  • The palace basement and rooftop, not just the state rooms
  • Ben Thanh night stalls on the side streets after 18:00
  • A rooftop drink instead of a paid observation deck

Skip it if

  • Notre-Dame interior, closed until 2028
  • An Opera House tour, none exist
  • Cu Chi on a 24-hour stopover, it eats six hours
  • Two observation decks in one trip

The decks are where visitors overspend. Bitexco charges 240,000 VND (about $9.25) for floor 49, and Landmark 81 doubles to 500,000 VND (about $19.30) at weekends.

Both towers sell the same view cheaper. A drink on Bitexco floors 50 to 52 costs about 90,000 VND, and the Blank Lounge sits on floor 75 of Landmark 81.

Two buildings run on restricted access. The Opera House offers no public tours; its interior comes only with a show ticket.

City Hall opens free for 20 minutes on 30 April to 1 May, 1 to 2 September and the last weekend of the month. Its facade is floodlit from 18:00 to 23:00 every night, which is free and better.

Group your days by area, not by checklist

Distances look small on a map and feel long in traffic. Pick one cluster per half-day, and you will see more with less time in a car. Fares are the September 2026 Grab rates. For these clusters in order, hour by hour, see our Ho Chi Minh City itinerary.

Binh Tay Market is about 8 km from Ben Thanh, a 50,000 VND Grab bike ride of 15 to 20 minutes.

Phu My Hung is 7.5 to 10 km out, so 20 to 40 minutes by car. Metro fares are simple: 7,000 to 20,000 VND per ride, and a day pass costs 40,000 VND.

The best free things to do

Some of the best hours here cost nothing at all. Wear shoes you can slip off, because pagodas ask for it.

The post office and Book Street. Two stops on one corner. The lane has shade, cafes with toilets and room for a stroller, with shops open roughly 8:00 to 22:00.

Nguyen Hue Walking Street. A 670 m promenade from City Hall to the river, open around the clock. It is kept free of vehicles on Saturday and Sunday from 18:00 to 22:00.

Turtle Lake. Repainted white and blue for Tet 2026 with new green lighting. Snack stalls selling banh trang tron ring the roundabout after 17:00.

Three pagodas and one pink church. The Jade Emperor Pagoda is free from 7:00 to 17:30, and couples pray for children in the Kim Hoa Thanh Mau room.

Thien Hau Temple in Cho Lon is free from roughly 6:00 to 17:30, with roof dioramas in 1908 ceramics. Xa Loi Pagoda holds the tallest bell tower in the city, at 32 m. Tan Dinh Church has been pink since 1957, free outside mass, open 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00.

The Thich Quang Duc memorial nearby is an open-air bronze, 6 m tall since 2010.

With kids, and with a stroller

Families do well here. Three of the big stops are flat, shaded and short, and child tickets are usually half price.

Timing matters more than the list. From May to November the showers arrive mid to late afternoon. Go outdoors between 8:00 and noon or after 16:00, and keep an indoor stop for 13:00 to 15:00. Our 2026 safety guide covers the risk question.

Saigon after dark

The city runs on two shifts. Eating streets fill from 17:00, monuments light up around 18:00, and the walking streets peak after 21:00.

  1. 1
    17:30

Eat first, on a food street

Vinh Khanh in old District 4 is busy from 17:00 to about 02:00, with nearly 90 eateries.

  2. 2
    18:00

    Monuments in evening light

City Hall is floodlit from 18:00 to 23:00, and Ben Thanh's night stalls open outside for the same hours.

  3. 3
    19:00

    Nguyen Hue and the river

The promenade is car-free on Saturday and Sunday from 18:00 to 22:00.

  4. 4
    20:30

    A view, at any budget

Bitexco closes its deck at 20:45, Landmark 81 at 21:30. A drink on floors 50 to 52 costs less than a ticket.

  5. 5
    21:30

Bui Vien, if you want the noise

Pedestrian-only Friday to Sunday from about 19:00 to 02:00, and loudest between 21:00 and 23:00.

The A O Show at the Opera House is the paid evening that surprises people. A bamboo circus, 60 minutes, usually at 18:00, from 700,000 to 1,750,000 VND (about $27 to $67). Our Night Tour covers eight stops in three hours from 18:30.

Eating your way around the city

Food is the cheapest and best thing to do here. Most dishes cost 25,000 to 80,000 VND (about $1.00 to $3.10), and a full street-food night lands between 180,000 and 350,000 VND per person.

Work the food streets instead of the restaurants. Vinh Khanh in old District 4 for seafood. Ho Thi Ky in old District 10 for more than 100 stalls. The Ban Co market alleys in old District 3 for breakfast. Ha Ton Quyen in old District 11 for dumplings until 01:00.

Coffee is its own stop. A street ca phe sua da costs 15,000 to 25,000 VND (about $0.60 to $0.95), against 40,000 to 55,000 VND in a chain. Cheo Leo, at 109/36 Nguyen Thien Thuat, has brewed with a cloth filter since 1938.

Michelin's 2026 Vietnam guide lists 193 places, 72 of them Bib Gourmand, and the city holds seven Bib pho shops. Our evening food route tastes ten dishes in one night, the Michelin list has its own tour, and a vegan version follows the same streets.

Half-day trips out of the city

One trip out of town earns its place. The Cu Chi Tunnels sit about 50 km from the centre and take a full half-day. Treat it as a day, not an add-on.

Both sites open 7:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. Since 1 February 2026, foreign visitors pay a 35,000 VND site fee plus a 100,000 VND service ticket.

That is 135,000 VND (about $5.20) per person at either site. Children aged 6 to 17 pay about half, and under 6 goes free.

The choice between the sites matters more than guides admit. Ben Dinh is closer and has widened concrete tunnels plus a shooting range, at $1 to $3 a bullet. Ben Duoc is 20 km further on, larger, quieter, with a memorial temple and no range.

Small-group tour$21 to $48Fewer people, more time on site
Own transport plus tickets135,000 VND entry per adultFlexible, but you drive 50 km each way

Budget six hours door to door, with 2 to 2.5 hours inside the tunnels. Leave by 08:00. Prices rise by about 30 percent on 30 April to 1 May, 1 to 2 September and 1 January.

Getting around: metro, Grab and your own feet

You do not need to rent anything. The centre is walkable, Grab is cheap and tracked, and the metro covers the eastern corridor.

Metro Line 1 opened on 22 December 2024 and runs 19.7 km from Ben Thanh Market to Suoi Tien. Three stations are underground, the first in the country, and eleven run above ground.

Trains run about 5:00 to 22:00 from Monday to Thursday, and until 23:00 from Friday to Sunday. The Ben Thanh station sits at the market's front door.

The airport run is short and rarely quick. Tan Son Nhat is about 8 km out: 25 to 45 minutes normally, 45 to 60 at peak.

A GrabCar costs 150,000 to 250,000 VND (about $5.80 to $9.65), a GrabBike 90,000 to 140,000 VND, and a metered taxi 170,000 to 280,000 VND. At terminal 2, Grab picks up in the multi-storey car park.

What 2026 lists still get wrong

Ten details repeated in guides written before the last two years of changes.

  1. Districts no longer exist. Wards replaced them on 1 July 2025, so treat old district names as landmarks.
  2. Notre-Dame is not reopening in 2027. The interior is for mass only, and the work runs past the end of 2027.
  3. Cu Chi costs 135,000 VND for foreign visitors since February 2026, not the 90,000 quoted everywhere.
  4. The palace changed prices on 1 May 2026. Palace only is 40,000 VND, and 80,000 adds the Norodom exhibition.
  5. Bitexco is 240,000 VND, not 200,000, and Landmark 81 doubles at weekends, from 300,000 to 500,000.
  6. There are no Opera House tours, and City Hall opens free only on public holidays and the last weekend of the month.
  7. Ben Thanh's indoor hall shuts at 18:00. The night market is outside, on Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh.
  8. The metro exists. Line 1 has run since December 2024, at 7,000 to 20,000 VND a ride, and stops at Ben Thanh.
  9. The Pho Museum opened in January 2026, at 211 Nguyen Thai Hoc, and its guided tasting costs 750,000 VND.
  10. Turtle Lake and the Ben Thanh facade were repainted in January 2026, so older photos look different.

When to come, and how the rain changes your day

The city is warm all year, so the real question is rain, crowds and price.

Temperatures sit between 25 and 35 C with humidity of 75 to 85 percent, so the months differ by water, not heat.

In the rainy season the showers are short, heavy and usually land mid to late afternoon, which is why locals run their errands before noon. September is the wettest month at about 321 mm, December to April is dry and busy, and October is the cheapest month of the year.

SeasonWhat to expectHow to plan
December to AprilDry, hot, busiestBook hotels early, start outdoor stops at 8:00
May to NovemberShort heavy afternoon showersOutdoors before noon, indoors 13:00 to 15:00
SeptemberWettest month, about 321 mmKeep two indoor options ready
Tet, 17 February 2026Fireworks, family meals, many shops shutHigher transport fares, quiet streets

Tet is the one date worth planning around. It is the most important holiday of the Vietnamese year, with firework displays, family meals, first-day visits and red envelopes. Shops close and reopen gradually, and long-distance transport sells out.

Questions we get on the bike

One day covers the walkable centre, which holds six of the main stops. Three days adds Cho Lon, the food streets and a half-day at Cu Chi.

December to April is the dry season, with clear skies and the most visitors. From May to November the rain comes in short heavy showers, mostly mid to late afternoon. October is the cheapest month for hotels.

The War Remnants Museum is 40,000 VND (about $1.55) for adults, and the Independence Palace 40,000 VND, or 80,000 with the exhibition. Bitexco costs 240,000. Landmark 81 runs 300,000 on weekdays and 500,000 at weekends, and Cu Chi 135,000 VND for foreign visitors.

The cathedral has been under restoration since 2017. Two gold-plated crosses of 400 kg each went up in March 2026. The interior opens for mass only, and the work runs past the end of 2027.

Bitexco is cheaper at 240,000 VND and takes its last entry at 20:45. Landmark 81 is taller but doubles from 300,000 to 500,000 VND at weekends. You can skip both decks and pay for a drink instead.

Violent crime is rare. The main risk is phone and bag snatching from passing motorbikes. Keep bags off the traffic side of the pavement around Ben Thanh and Bui Vien, and take a Grab home after 22:00.

Yes, and it covers more ground. Our City Tour runs four hours across eight landmarks with hotel pickup, and the palace and museum tickets are included in the $45 price.
