Best Banh Mi in Saigon: Where Locals Actually Queue
The best banh mi in Saigon is bread, pate, pickles and meat, eaten standing up. Rice flour makes the crust shatter, not resist.
- Three addresses, all in the old District 1: Huynh Hoa, Bay Ho, 37 Nguyen Trai.
- Prices in 2026: around 20,000 VND at Bay Ho, 18,000 to 25,000 VND at the cart, 65,000 to 75,000 VND at Huynh Hoa.
- Huynh Hoa runs 06:00 to 22:00 and has the queue. The Nguyen Trai cart works the afternoon.
- Order by pointing at the filling, and say cat doi if you want it cut in half.
- Go before 08:00 or after 20:00 to skip the worst of the wait.

Best banh mi in Saigon: the three addresses worth the trip
Three addresses have carried a reputation for decades, all inside the old District 1, which the city renamed in July 2025. Two stand ninety metres apart, the third a short ride north.
| Address | Why it is on the list | Price range in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Huynh Hoa 26-32 Le Thi Rieng | The best known of the three, with a permanent queue of fifteen to thirty minutes and thirteen fillings in one sandwich. A second branch runs at 220 Phan Xich Long. | 65,000 to 75,000 VND |
| Bay Ho Huynh Khuong Ninh | Three generations at the same spot since 1930, the oldest of the three, smaller and quieter, and less than a third of the price at Huynh Hoa. | Around 20,000 VND |
| Banh Mi 37 Nguyen Trai alley | A cart, not a shop, selling one thing: thit nuong, with five pork patties grilled over charcoal to order. | 18,000 to 25,000 VND |
Huynh Hoa — thirteen fillings in one sandwich
Open since 1989 at 26 Le Thi Rieng, with a second branch at 220 Phan Xich Long, Huynh Hoa stacks thirteen fillings into a baguette bigger than most forearms. Count 65,000 to 75,000 VND, a queue of fifteen to thirty minutes, and ask for the herbs and pickles on the side when you take away: the bread stays crisp.

Bay Ho — house-made pâté since 1930
Trading on Huynh Khuong Ninh since 1930 and now in the hands of the third generation, Bay Ho makes its pate, cha lua and pork floss in house and slips them into small loaves meant to be nibbled. Around 20,000 VND, served from 13:30 to 19:00, with xiu mai as an option.

Banh Mi 37 — five patties grilled in front of you
At the mouth of the alley at 37 Nguyen Trai, the cart does one thing: thit nuong, five pork patties pressed on the charcoal grill in front of you, then pickles, herbs and sauce. It opens between 16:00 and 17:00 and closes when the meat runs out, often before 19:00. Budget 18,000 to 25,000 VND.

What a banh mi costs in 2026
In Saigon a banh mi runs from 18,000 VND at a cart to 75,000 at the top addresses. That top price climbed from 58,000 after the pandemic to 73,000 in late 2025, over a quarter more in four years.
Wheat is imported, so the baguette follows world flour prices and the dong. Pork sets most of the rest, since almost every filling is pork.
Rent and reputation widen the gap, and so does what you buy. One sandwich is built to feed two, the other is a small loaf.
| Place | Price of one | What one buys | Payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huynh Hoa | 65,000 to 75,000 VND | Thirteen fillings, enough for two | Cards sometimes |
| Bay Ho | Around 20,000 VND | A small loaf, house-made pâté | Cards sometimes |
| Banh Mi 37 | 18,000 to 25,000 VND | Five patties grilled to order | Cash only |
When to go, and when the good ones sell out
A banh mi is a breakfast and a snack, and the baguette is at its best in the hours after it leaves the oven.
The three addresses cover the day between them.
- Huynh Hoa covers both ends. The queue thins before 08:00 and again after 20:00.
- Bay Ho opens after lunch and its queue is the ordinary kind. That is exactly the point of going there instead.
- Banh Mi 37 is the stop on the way back from a museum afternoon. It runs until the patties are gone, often before 19:00.
Huynh Hoa sits in Ben Thanh, minutes from the market hall, which closes at 18:00 while the streets around it keep going.
How to order without speaking Vietnamese
Pointing works. Four steps and five short words make it quicker.
Say how many. One finger and một, two fingers and hai.
Name the filling. Bò is beef: một bò gets you one beef banh mi.
Rule out the chili. Không cay, worth saying if you are unsure about the heat.
Ask for it in two. Cắt đôi cuts the sandwich in half, to share without asking for a knife.

What makes a Saigon banh mi different?
A Saigon banh mi is built in three moves, and only the last one moves the price.
- 1The bread
Rice flour goes into the dough. The crust shatters instead of resisting, and the crumb presses flat around the filling. Baked the same morning, eaten within hours.
- 2The base
Always the same: liver pate, a swipe of butter or mayonnaise, pickled daikon and carrot, cucumber, coriander, a few slices of chili.
- 3The meat
Bò is beef, stir-fried with onion, sometimes wrapped in a leaf. Pâté or chả is the cold cut and pork roll version: milder and cheaper.
What truyền thống and ba vị mean
Two Vietnamese terms tell you what goes inside the sandwich and what it costs.
- Truyền thống (traditional): Pate, cold cuts and pickles in a single sandwich.
- Ba vị (three kinds): Three meats. The most expensive line on a cart.
None of this is a restaurant dish. A banh mi is bought standing up, wrapped in paper and eaten within ten minutes. The best addresses are the ones with constant turnover, not the longest menu.
