Ho Chi Minh City Itinerary: 1 to 4 Days, Hour by Hour

This Ho Chi Minh itinerary is the plan we give friends, hour by hour, for one, two, three or four days. Every opening time and ticket price was checked in September 2026. We walk in the cool hours, go indoors in the heat, and keep each evening for food.

One day: District 1 and Ben Thanh

One day covers the centre well, if you start early. Most of it is walkable; use a GrabBike for any leg you do not want to walk in the heat.

How to use the day well

At the Independence Palace, go down to the basement war room and up to the rooftop. They are the two rooms most visitors skip.

At the War Remnants Museum, start with the aircraft yard. Keep the Agent Orange room upstairs for last. It is not suitable for children under about 12.

At Ben Thanh, only the food stalls have fixed prices. Open at 40 to 50% of the quote on everything else. Our Ben Thanh Market guide has 2026 reference prices.

What you give up

  • Cholon and its temples, which need a morning of their own.
  • The Fine Arts Museum and the pagodas of Tan Dinh.
  • Any rooftop, unless you swap it for dinner.

Two days: add Cholon at dawn

Day 1 is the one-day plan. Day 2 goes west to Cholon, the old Chinese quarter, while the markets are at their busiest.

  1. 1
    6:30

    Binh Tay Market

About 8 km from Ben Thanh, around 50,000 VND by GrabBike, 15 to 20 minutes. The wholesale rush runs 6:00 to 9:00. Allow 45 minutes.

  2. 2
    7:30

    Dim sum at Tien Phat

18 Ky Hoa, open 6:00 to 12:30, 12:00 at weekends. The rush starts around 8:00. Dishes cost 62,000 to 110,000 VND.

  3. 3
    8:45

Thien Hau Temple and the medicine street

710 Nguyen Trai, free, about 30 minutes. Then walk Hai Thuong Lan Ong, the traditional-medicine row.

  4. 4

  7. 7
    18:30

A night ride or Nguyen Hue

Our Night Tour leaves at 6:30 PM. On Saturday and Sunday, Nguyen Hue is closed to vehicles from 18:00 to 22:00.

Allow two hours for Cholon itself. Cha Tam Church, at 25 Hoc Lac, is free and fits between Thien Hau Temple and the market. Our Cholon guide has more stops and addresses.

Three days: the plan most people need

Three days is the format we recommend most. You see the centre, Cholon and a quieter local side, and each evening is different.

  • Turtle Lake: banh trang tron stalls ring the lake after 17:00.

Four days: one day out of the city

A fourth day is for leaving town. In one day, the realistic choice is a half day at the Cu Chi Tunnels, or a full day in the Mekong Delta. Not both.

Day 4 with Cu Chi

7:00 leave the centre. Both sites open 7:00 to 17:00. The ticket is 135,000 VND for foreigners since 1 February 2026, about half for ages 6 to 17, free under 6.

Early afternoon back in town. Group half-day tours cost $15 to $25 with transport. Expect a 30% surcharge on 30 April to 1 May, 1 to 2 September and 1 January.

Late afternoon Landmark 81 SkyView, on a weekday: 300,000 VND, against 500,000 at weekends. Opening times conflict between sources, so check the closing hour on the day.

With children, know that the paths are dirt and the tunnels require crouching. Leave the stroller at the hotel.

Where to stay so these days work

Your hotel decides how much of each day you spend in traffic. For these plans, stay central.

BasePer nightWhat it means for the plan
District 1, Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue$10 to $210Day 1 on foot, the most walkable area
Ben Thanh3-star $25 to $35Metro Line 1 station at the market door
District 33 and 4-star $18 to $4015 minutes on foot to District 1, and much of Day 3 is on your doorstep
Thao Dien$19 to $108Quieter nights, metro to Ben Thanh, 35,000 to 60,000 VND by GrabBike
Bui VienHostel beds about $10Very loud Friday to Sunday until about 2:00. Not for families

Cholon rooms are cheap, but the other days start far away. Our where to stay guide goes area by area.

Getting between stops, and what each ride costs

GrabBike is the fastest way between stops, and the price shows in the app before you ride. These are the legs in the plans above.

Rain and rush hour push Grab fares up 1.3 to 1.8 times. The metro runs about 5:00 to 22:00 Monday to Thursday, and to 23:00 Friday to Sunday.

Skip street xe om: a driver who agrees to “100” may later mean dollars. After 22:00, take a Grab for anything over 500 m. Our safety guide covers bag snatching and taxi tricks.

Heat, rain and the quiet hours

It is 25 to 35 C all year, with 75 to 85% humidity. The plans follow one rule: outside before 12:00 and after 16:00.

HoursWhat worksWhy
6:00 to 9:00Markets, Cholon, churches, breakfastMornings are usually dry; markets are busiest
9:00 to 12:00Palace, museums, pagodasBefore the heat peaks
13:00 to 15:00Indoor stops, lunch, hotel restThe midday heat: our indoor window
15:00 to 17:00Cafes, a view from a towerRainy-season showers fall mid to late afternoon
From 17:00Food streets, Nguyen Hue, night ridesCooler, and the city eats outdoors

What to cut from a blog itinerary

Many online plans list 15 sights for one day. Add up the visit times on our fact sheet: ten central stops take 7 to nearly 8 hours before a single ride, meal or rest.

Worth it for

  • The palace basement and rooftop
  • Nguyen Hue on a weekend evening, closed to traffic 18:00 to 22:00
  • Eating at Ben Thanh rather than shopping there
  • Landmark 81 on a weekday

Skip it if

  • Notre-Dame’s interior: open for mass only during restoration
  • The Opera House without a show ticket: no public tours
  • City Hall: tours only 30 April to 1 May, 1 to 2 September and the last weekend of the month
  • Cu Chi and the Mekong in a single 13-hour day

Our rule: two big sights per half day, one area per day, and a break at midday. You will see less, and remember more.

When a tour is the shortcut

Some slots in these plans are dense: tickets, rides, queues and a map. A tour with us folds them into one block. Your guide is a local woman who drives; you ride behind her.

TourStartsReplaces in the plansPrice
City Tour, 4 h8:30 AM or 1:30 PMDay 1 morning: palace and War Remnants tickets included, eight landmarks$45
Street Food Tour, 4 h5:30 PMDay 1 evening: 10+ dishes across five districts, including Cholon$57
Night Tour, 3 h6:30 PMDay 2 evening: eight stops after dark$37

Hotel pickup is in Districts 1, 2 and 3. No deposit, pay on the day, free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Children from 6 ride with a parent.

What each day costs

Per person, per day, room counted in full. These figures come from our line-by-line budget page.

$20 to $29Backpacker
$54 to $82Mid-range
From $197Comfort

The sights in these plans are cheap. Day 1 tickets come to 80,000 VND, about $3. Cu Chi adds 135,000, about $5. Three mid-range days with two tours come to about $235 to $312 per person.

The detail, line by line, is on our Ho Chi Minh City budget per day page.

Questions we get on the bike

Are 3 days enough for Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, for the city itself. Three days cover the centre, Cholon and old District 3 without rushing. Add a fourth for Cu Chi or the Mekong.

What can I do in Ho Chi Minh City in 24 hours?

Post Office and Notre-Dame square early, Independence Palace, War Remnants Museum, Ben Thanh after lunch, then street food in the evening.

Which area is the best base for this itinerary?

District 1 for walking, or District 3 for calm and value. Thao Dien suits families who want quieter nights and a metro line.

Do I need to book sights in advance?

The palace and War Remnants Museum sell tickets on site; War Remnants has also sold online since 10 February 2026. Book shows and tours ahead.

Is Cu Chi realistic in one day?

Yes, as a half day: about 6 hours door to door, 2 to 2.5 hours on site. Last entry is 16:00. Adding the Mekong makes a rushed 13-hour day.

What is the worst time to cross the city?

In rain or rush hour. Grab fares rise 1.3 to 1.8 times, and the airport ride stretches from 25 to 45 minutes to 45 to 60 at peak.

Does this itinerary work with children?

Mostly. Skip the War Remnants Museum under about 12. The Post Office, Nguyen Hue and the palace grounds are stroller-friendly; Cu Chi is not.
